THE LIMINAL
AN INTERACTIVE MONTHLY ALMANAC FROM FOX & THISTLE STUDIO

Look Out For :

Mountain laurels, honeysuckle, peonies, wild roses, clover, Queen Anne’s lace, fireflies emerging, cicadas buzzing, swallows darting, fledglings testing wing, fawns hiding, rabbits bounding, turtles in roadways, dragonflies skimming, thickening canopies, heavier air, sudden thunderstorms, warming creeks, wild strawberries, mulberries ripening, hayfields growing, longer twilights, & the steady hum of mosquitoes!

Look Up For :

Mid-May brings the darkest skies of the coming lunar cycle with a Super New Moon on the 16th, excellent for Milky Way viewing and deep-sky observations. As the moon waxes through the month, Venus and Jupiter appear low in the western evening sky. A rare blue moon and micromoon on May 31st, making it appear smaller and dimmer. Venus will appear bright in the west after sunset through early June, and Mars and Saturn will be visible before dawn.

FESTINA LENTE — MAKE HASTE SLOWLY

Part Five: COMMITMENT — Diamond Ring & Foliage

dabble: 1. To splash or splatter with or as if with a liquid. 2. To splash liquid gently and playfully. 3. To undertake something superficially or without serious intent.

I only ever dabbled in writing the way I dabble in everything else. Almost as if by distraction. This newsletter began as a way to cobble together all of my distractions.

What was this to be? An almanac? A zine? A catalog? Calendars. Letters. Drawings. Recipe cards. Poetry. Community.

Or rather, is the obsessive marketing and listing and distributing and monetizing and coding and analytics... now keeping me from doing what I love?

Along with my calendar, THE LIMINAL has become a way to be accountable for those distractions. Each piece. Each poem. Gently casts another thread deeper into my creative work. Connecting the dots. Weaving the pattern.

And all I need do, is keep from getting distracted from the distractions that matter.

The local nursery sells a blackberry bush without thorns, so now the birds can take them freely.

Next month's issue will conclude our six month study of FESTINA LENTE:

Adaptation: Dolphin & Chameleon

This year’s ‘Cold Arc’ FORTNIGHT CALENDAR is nearing completion. This project mirrors my 'Warm Arc' calendar but instead centers around the shortest day of the year and runs from May 2026 – July 2027. Both calendars will be free to download for subscribers. Poster sizes will also be available for sale.

No praise is finer than that which is passed along by our readers, please pass the LIMINAL along!

I was gifted this small ficus tree in 2017 by a friend who keeps bonsai. The following spring, my oldest young adulthood companion Milo died. Some weekends, I still bring this tree out on the patio to sit with it.

In the words of Bokonon: Live by the Harmless Untruths that make you Kind and Healthy and Happy.

HOTHOUSE FLOWERS

FIELD GUIDES FOR MINDS & HANDS — Abstraction thru Execution

AUDELS CARPENTERS AND BUILDERS GUIDE - Set of Four - (1945)

Born in early 20th-century New York, this set was the workingman’s pocket professor—first published in 1922 and refined over decades of dust, drafts, and drawing boards. This edition carries the quiet confidence of the postwar United States.

Each volume is filled with hand-drawn diagrams, plainspoken instruction, and time-tested technique. A handsome archive of know-how for the maker, the mender, and the tinkerer.

AUDELS SHEET METAL WORKERS HANDYBOOK (1942)

A portable compression of shop knowledge. This handy volume contains apprenticeship, geometry, fabrication, and pragmatism. Beyond the clear how-to instructions, much of the wisdom lies in developing patterns. Origami for sheet metal.

The diagrams themselves embody and illustrate the reasoning. Angles, seams, bends, and measurements become operational relationships that reveal themselves through hands-on use. The handbook demands spatial visualization, improvisation, and an ability to work within constraint.

THE AMERICAN VIGNOLA (1929)

Part architectural manual, part pattern book, and part encyclopedia of classical design, this portable volume is adapted from the Renaissance tradition of Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola. The American editions present a practical reference for tradesmen and designers.

Centuries of architectural convention are compressed into a visual logic encoding how to see structure, proportion, and rhythm. At its core, this book is about relational geometry, training the eye as much as the hand.

the Giving

staring into, at the thing
the thing i barely see
there's no good way to put it
the thing is watching me

the more i ask, the more i see
the less that i get done
the less i do, the less i know
the more that i must shun

the more i give up to the thing
the less i have to give
the more i take, the less i make
that's how i lose my gift

COMMITMENT UNDER PRESSURE

A few of our Offhand Cards for Common Situations function as break-up cards :

Each day is better than the next

Count the stars without me

May the bridges I burn light the way

(break-up poem inside)
