This hand-carved terracotta tile depicts the timeless pairing of tortoise and serpent. In Chinese cosmology, this image is known as the Black Tortoise of the North (Xuánwǔ)—one of the Four Symbols guarding the heavens. Unlike the dragon (east), bird (south), and tiger (west), the Black Tortoise is shown as a tortoise entwined with a snake, representing endurance, longevity, and protection.
Found in Han dynasty tomb carvings and repeated for centuries in art and architecture, this motif was placed as a guardian emblem for the northern direction, linked with water and winter. Today it is still appreciated as a symbol of stability, regeneration, and cosmic balance.
